SANFORD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY at Duke University

How To Join

Since 2006, we have offered RSL gateway options in two core policy courses: PUBPOL 114: Political Analysis in Public Policy and PUBPOL 116: Policy Choice as Value Conflict.

If you are enrolled in a public policy course that offers an RSL gateway option, your professor will mention this during the first class when the course syllabus is distributed. Sometime during the first few weeks of the semester, your professor will discuss research service-learning at greater length in class, and Hart Leadership staff will present a project with a community partner that is designed for your course. We will give you detailed information about the service project, the requirements for participating in the RSL gateway option, and information about how you can apply if you are interested.

Currently, we have not established community-based research and capstone RSL courses in the public policy curriculum, but we are working to develop such opportunities now. Once you have taken a gateway RSL course, though, you can do an independently-funded community-based research project in the summer.  You can also do an independent study project or honors project that builds on your community-based research.  We are happy to provide guidance to you about how to design a three-stage pathway project that fits your interests and needs.  Please contact RSL Coordinator Andrea Marston at andrea.marston@duke.edu to request an RSL information packet.
